Description

A late nineteenth century advertising trade card produced by the Willimantic Linen Company. The card depicts Jumbo, promoted as the largest elephant in captivity, being dragged through New York City by unbreakable Willimantic cotton thread to demonstrate the thread’s strength. Trade cards were a common advertising format in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, typically featuring an attention grabbing image on the front and product text on the back.
